I have the old wooden sea chest which belonged to my grandad and it bears the label inside of Captain of SS City of Bath. I know that he was born actually in the hexagonal clock at the docks in Bootle a that his own father was the time-keeper and that my grandfather then went on to life at sea - my mother has his papers from his apprenticeship. Beyond this I have no details regarding the ss city of bath and thus has been searching on the net for information. I have found this website useful. Thank you.

Thankyou for a fantastic site. Sidney Britt in Lifeboat 1 was my great great uncle and this site has made it possible to find out more about the City of Cairo and pass the story of the Merchant Navy on to the next generation. Hope to pass on some photos soon. Thanks.

hi, your site is fascinating. My grandad was third or fourth engineer on the City of Adelaide when it was torpedoed and sunk on the 30th March 1944 and I never tire of his recollections of his time on the ship and the ten days he spent in the lifeboat after it sank. thank you

Hello,

I have found your homepage from the Mercantile Navy website when searching for the MV Abosso which sunk in October 1942. My mum's uncle James Reginald Davenport was on his first trip on this vessel after joining and sadly lost his life when it was sunk by the U-Boat.

On May 2nd I am taking my mum back up to Liverpool to do a family tree trail and she has said that she would like to see a memorial to her uncle if there is one. So, my question is do you know where I can find such a memorial and where can I source more information on the Abosso II please?
Any help that you can provide would be much appreciated. I see from a forum post that you mention a chap in the netherlands who has been doing research on the ship.

Kind regards and Happy Easter.

I am the younger daughter of Douglas Quantrill. My father left a file of various newspaper cuttings, photos, etc about the City of Cairo and his experiences. He would have loved this website which I discovered recently. I am in the process of sending copies of things to Hugh so hopefully he can add it to the website.

Admin reply: Thank you, Sarah very much appreciated.

I am related to Diana Jarman through marriage. She was my uncle's widow (John Jarman killed in Malaya) on my father's side. I am currently researching our family history and have only known of her story quite recently, but am extremely proud of all our family who experienced the tragedies of the Second World War. My father also fought in India although he is loathe to talk about his experiences as I am sure are many still alive today.

I am permanent resident of St.Helena Island and was looking for a photo of the RFA DARKDALE and stumbled upon your site.
I am a maritime enthusiast and remember Doctor Douglas Quantrill. He visited the Island in early 1982 and at the age of 12 travelled with him to Cape Town aboard the tiny ICI explosives carrier ship ARAGONITE (I've never ever been able to trace what happened this tiny passenger vessel - does anyone know??)
As a bonus I even ended up with a photo of the SS City of Cairo and much more than I had bargained for.
I must congratulate you for producing a terrific site, very well put together and thoroughly informative.
Regards
Bruce

I would like to congratulate you on your wonderful website. I am doing some research on graves in my village churchyard and Donald and Marjorie Miller are buried here. Donald's account of the sinking and their subsequent ordeal has helped me to build up a picture of him and his wife. Obviously a man with deep Christian beliefs he went on to enjoy his later years in our lovely village. He was involved with the church and also sketched and painted the church, village green and pond.

Great website!

I have a great interest in u-672 and just recently was able to speak with a crew member of u-672, he also served aboard u-68 and is one of the kindest gents I have had the pleasure of speaking with during my research.

I will email him about the exact dates he served aboard u-68, but I do believe that he was on board during the sinking of the Cairo.
