my dad was also in the merchant navy and took part in the d-day landings
Have already been in touch via Ships Nostalgia nevertheless I once again congratulate you on creating a most interesting site and also thank you for the excellent assistance afforded me in my "quest" for information regarding the ships in which I sailed. As for your father's experiences re- City of Cairo - "AWESOME"
Admin reply: Thank you Noel, I appreciate your kind comments very much. It is our generation who owe you so much.
Hi Hugh, I found your wonderful website when I was looking for information about the MV Oil Endeavour [private post]
My engineering apprentice-ship was served in Brown Brothers, Leith.
Many of the old fitters, had been to sea, some of them had sailed during the war. The stories they told were fascinating.
When I finished I sailed as a 5th engineer on the City of Coventry in 1961 (and eventually with other ships).
Although I was only in a few years the experience has never left me.
Bill
When I visit Liverpool I try and get to and give a nod to the Monument to Engineers and Stokers and helpers in the Merchant from all over the world.
Once again Hughie,
Reading Dad's story just fills me with so much pride.
Lest we forget.
Ellerman City Lines was my husband's first job! He used to work in the Indian Crew Dept. which he loved. He developed a career in personnel management.
Thank for putting together this wonderful informative web site. I came across this while researching my Grand Father’s journal from WWII. My Grand Father, John Sutherland Davies, fought with the Royal Scots 2/10 in Northern Russia in 1918 and 1919. They were transported from Edinburgh to Archangel Russia in 1918 aboard the SS City of Cairo.
A wonderful website Hugh and really interesting.
David.

My own are not so terrible although many were scary. I happened to be sailing down to Walvis Bay in the "Fort McMurray" independent at the similar date.
Keep up the good work Hugh, Ancient Mariners like me are very grateful for people like you to remember people like us. Regards Eric Fisher
Admin reply: Hello Eric,
