History has no bounds an excellent account of a true “Barrach” we don’t appreciate what these brave men and women have done for us.
Brilliant website.
Wonderful site.
Well done Hugh on your wonderful site, My grandfather was Les Boundy the second mate on the City of Cairo, and he went on to spend the rest of his career with Ellermans reaching the rank of captain. Once again congratulations on a fascinating site.
Hugh, being a good friend of the family, I have learnt so much more of your family history after reading your fantastic web site, it's a tribute to your father and a pleasure to read..
Jane Ellen Davies, one of the survivors, died this last week aged 98 years. Her funeral is this Friday 18th November, 63 years to the month after the sinking. She is survived by her daughters Ann and Janet who were also on the ship and Gwenda, born later. Her husband, The Rev David William Davies died some 40 years ago.
My father has told me what he remembers of his Uncle Leslie Boundy's tale of going back to the ship to retrieve the sextant and then being at sea for days. It's great for me to read in detail what happened, I didn't even know the name of the ship and to see photos is wonderful. Thank-you.
I have been researching SS City of Cairo for a friend. I have discovered a person in America who is selling a video of interviews with some of the survivors. Also I have read about a documentary by TVS International. Does anyone know where a tape of the documentary could be obtained from?
Dear Hugh, what a wonderful site. thank you so much. I am preparing a book about women on the wartime seas and would never have come across the story of Gladys Usher, missionary, without you. Would it be possible to reproduce the photo of Dulcie Kendall and Colin, which I see is ©Ralph Barker? How would I contact him? Many congratulations. You've done such a thorough job. Jo
I remember when 7 years-old returning to GB on SS Mahanada ex-BOM-LIV in 1946. Years later read book re. SS City of Cairo. Did not she last sail final ex-Walvis Bay post re-fuelling? Wonderful site, really marvellous, God Bless You.
